CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I came here for answers, but the moment all three boys’ eyes land on me again, I know I won’t be getting them.

Not when a single glance in my direction makes my mind go blank while other parts of me awaken. My head swims, my thighs tighten, my breaths shorten.

At least this time, when we sit together on the couch in the middle of the room, I’m prepared for the chill touch of Rowan’s skin on mine as he slips an arm over my shoulders. Lawrence sits on the other side of me, but at a far more respectable distance. His lighter green eyes glance to Rowan and then back to me. Grey pulls up a bean bag and sits on the other side of the coffee table, across from me.

Out of the three of them, Grey is watching me the most intently. It’s intimidating, almost, the way he looks at me.

Nothing near as intimidating as the next words that come out of his mouth.

“Darcy, what would you do if you fell in love with someone, but you knew they wouldn’t approve of the real you? Not if they got to know you. To really know you.”

I’m left dumbfounded for a moment. I half expect one of the other boys to elbow Grey or tell him he’s being stupid, but they don’t.

They just look at me with the same cool intensity until I give them an answer.

“I don’t know...” I say, mind reeling as I struggle to form some kind of coherent answer. What would I do?

It’s not a question I’ve asked myself before.

I’ve never been the hopeless romantic, the type to sit and daydream about falling in love. I never had the time for it.

Now, now I find myself sitting amidst the three most confusing, gorgeous boys I’ve ever met, and I’m hardly prepared for the scenario I’ve found myself in.

These are hardly the kind of questions I expected to be asked—to say nothing of the answers I want in return.

A heaviness hangs in the air. It clings to the shadows in the corners, lingers on the cold skin of Rowan’s stiffened arm around my shoulders.

Grey leans a little closer, and as he does, so do both of his brothers. “You have secrets, don’t you, Darcy?”

My lips part to answer, and Grey’s eyes drop to stare at them. My first instinct is to answer him honestly, but the way he’s looking at me, the way they’re all looking at me, makes me hesitate.

I’m the only one surprised when the lie slips out. “Yes.”

Secrets? What secrets?

I swallow, hard, but my answer seems to have settled something I didn’t know needed settling. Grey leans away a bit, a flicker of something like hope in his eyes.

“And what if that secret was so big you thought it would destroy everything you’d built?”

My mouth has gone dry. Rowan’s arm tightens around me.

“I’d tell them the truth, I guess,” I say, hesitantly. “I’d have to, right? It’s their right decide whether they could accept the real me or not.
